Do you want to see MILLIONS of free books online?
I’ve figured it out.
You already know (woop woop!) that you can discover free audiobooks online if you’ve been following along. We discussed sites like LibriVox and MindWebs, which provide readers with free audio novels and short stories.
When headphones aren’t an option, we’ve got 10 additional sites where you can read free novels online. You’ll find free YA books, graphic novels, fanfiction, children’s literature, and more, in addition to the classics (which are great too).
In addition, these sites collectively contain a large number of excellent books. Quite a bit. Thousands of thousands of thousands of thousands of thousands of thousands of thousands of thousands of thousands of Seriously. Your TBR list may be wailing, but your wallet is smiling?
Following is the list of places to find free books online.
- Goodreads
- International Children’s Digital Library
- Internet Sacred Text Archive
- ManyBooks
- Open Culture
- Open Library
- Overdrive
- Project Gutenberg
- Read Print
- Riveted
1. FREE SHELVES AT GOODREADS
While many of the books on the following websites are classics that are out of print, you can get more recent online novels for free on Goodreads‘ free eBooks shelves (complete or excerpted) or by searching for “free-online” in the tag.
2. INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL LIBRARY FOR CHILDREN
If you’re looking for free children’s books on the internet, the International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL) is a nonprofit organisation whose aim is to “promote tolerance and respect for other cultures by giving access to the best of children’s literature from across the world.”
3. ARCHIVE OF SACRED TEXT ON THE INTERNET
The ISTA online collection, which is dedicated to religion, mythology, and folklore, allows online access to hundreds of sacred writings. Its mission also includes religious pluralism, tolerance, and scholarship (which is pretty rad of course).
You’ll find Bible translations, as well as the Talmud, Vedas, and other religious texts.
4. MANYBOOKS
ManyBooks, as the name says, offers a large number of free online books. In fact, there are almost 30,000 of them. The bulk of their eBooks are compatible with Kindles, Nooks, iPads, and other electronic devices.
5. CULTURE OF OPENNESS
Open Culture provided a curated selection of free audiobooks to readers, and they’ve now done the same for free eBooks. On their website, you’ll find 800 free and downloadable eBooks that you can read in your browser or download for iPads, iPhones, and Kindles.
6. ACCESS TO AN OPEN LIBRARY
Users can access over 1.7 million free eBooks on Open Library’s website. It’s a part of the Internet Archive, which allows users to submit (and correct!) books as well. They both provide free full-text copies of books as well as links to pay books elsewhere.
7. EXCESSIVE DRIVE
OverDrive’s Libby App connects you with your local libraries so you may check out eBooks on your mobile device. You’ll be able to check out classic and current eBooks for free, anywhere and at any time, with just a library card. They have almost two million eBooks and audiobooks in their catalogue. They’ve also lately made it easy to transfer books from your computer to your tablet.
8. GUTENBERG PROJECT
Project Gutenberg remains a terrific resource for classic novels and obscure older texts in the public domain. The group is solely handled by volunteers who digitise and proofread the work. They’ve added over 50,000 free books to their online library.
9. READ THE PRINT
Read Print is an easy-to-use service that lets you read classics online. It also has a nice bookshelf widget where you can keep track of books you’ve read and books you wish to read (there are a lot of them).
10. RIVETED
Riveted provides free YA books online, either entire books or extracts, for a limited period.
You may read some sweet free novels, download them to any device, participate in giveaways, and discuss your YA favourites by signing into the Simon & Schuster site and becoming a member.
