I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I recently joined an erotic book club.
And, to be honest? It *completely* pushed me out of my sexual comfort zone. (And I make a living by writing about sex!) I’d never read erotica before, and I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who haven’t either.
The thing is, I never expected to be so enthralled by reading. Nonetheless, I finished the book club assignment—Beautiful Stranger by Christina Lauren—in a few days, and I couldn’t keep my hands off my boyfriend (or my vibrator) as I flipped through each chapter.
I was caught off guard at the club meeting. What I expected to be a group of 20-somethings ready to discuss all things oral sex over red wine turned out to be a group of women of all ages. I was the youngest person present.
I initially felt like a phoney. These women were experts, completely well-read in the erotic genre (I’m talking alien! sex!). But, after a couple of beers to calm my nerves, I found myself bonding over sexual fantasies with women who were diametrically opposed to me.
And I want you to have the same opportunity. Erotica can be extremely liberating, introducing you to a completely new way of experiencing pleasure. You can read it while riding the train! It’s a park! You’re sitting on the couch in front of your parents! (All right, maybe hold off on that one.) And no one will ever know you’re having a good time! Following are the 5 Best Erotic Books to Read
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
TikTok is obsessed with this book, which is reason enough to try it. Feyre, a young huntress, finds herself in a dangerous fantasy world she has only heard about in legends. Tamlin, the immortal faerie, and she has a very *spicy* enemies-to-lovers affair.
Bridgerton: The Duke And I by Julia Quinn
You’ve probably seen Bridgerton on Netflix by now—literally, it’s everywhere. So, while you’re waiting for the next season, pick up a book and get a good dose of “your grace.” If the series wasn’t already steamy enough for you, the books take it to the next level. You can also get a head start on the rest of the series while season two is being worked on.
If you haven’t seen it yet, the Bridgerton series follows the Bridgerton siblings as they search for love and marriage in high-society London in the early 1800s. Each book follows the romantic journey of one of the siblings. This first novel in the series, which is followed by the first season of the show, is about Daphne falling in love with the Duke of Hastings, who is also her older brother’s best friend.
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
If you’ve seen the show, you’ll know that Jamie Fraser is simply…wow. He sets such a high standard for men. Time travel, the Scottish highlands, and some seriously hot sex That’s essentially what Outlander is.
Clare, a former British combat nurse, has just been reunited with her husband on their first trip away together since the war. Clare is transported back to the mid-1700s when she enters an ancient standing rock circle. And it’s at this point that she meets Jamie, a young Scots warrior, and the plot takes off.
The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory
Are you new to erotic novels? You could start with something like The Wedding Date, which could also be classified as a romance novel. It’s a great way to get your feet wet in the genre while also getting your fill of romcom-y charm and sex. Here’s how it works: Drew chooses a stranger, Alexa, to be his plus-one to a wedding—a classic fake significant other storey that leads to, you guessed it, actual love.
Temptation by Ivy Smoak
Nothing new there: a student falls in love with her tall, dark, and handsome professor. This professor, however, has a little secret: he used to live the billionaire lifestyle in New York City. He thought it would be simple not to interact with any of his students, but he never expected to meet such a lovely lady as Penny. This book is extremely hot.
