Lakers' Russell Westbrook addresses new bench role: 'It's beneficial for everybody'

When the prospect first emerged, Russell Westbrook didn't appear overly enthusiastic about a bench position.

Last season, when Frank Vogel frequently put him on the bench, he complained aloud about back problems, claiming he wasn't accustomed to such absences.

In the final game of the preseason, Darvin Ham summoned him off the bench, but he departed the game after just five minutes due to a hamstring injury, which he later attributed to his reserve position.

Since his freshman year, Westbrook had started every game he had participated in prior to this one.

But they made a change after the Los Angeles Lakers dropped their opening three contests of the year while he was in the starting lineup.

In his last two contests, Westbrook has played off the bench, including the Lakers' lone victory thus far.
